The Immigrant Employment Council of BC (IEC-BC) is excited to announce its fifth PowerHack event to be held on March 5 – 6, 2021. Inspired by a lack of opportunities for talented skilled immigrants in the technology industry to showcase their skills to employers looking to hire, the first PowerHack event was created in July 2019. With 14 participants and two employers, the team-based hackathon provided a platform for newcomers to compete in solving problems using their unique skills in software development and design. This was followed by three more hackathons, with approximately 60 newcomers and nine employers from the technology industry.
The onset of the pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges locally and at a global scale. It has also further illuminated that immigrants are an integral part of Canada’s economic recovery. In response, our upcoming PowerHack event has been redesigned to increase opportunities for newcomers to showcase their competencies and connect directly with employer representatives. The team-based approach will be replaced with an individual problem-solving format, meet and greet, and speed interviews.
Employers participating in our virtual event will be looking for internationally trained software engineers with:
- At least three years of international software engineering experience.
- Intermediate to advanced language proficiency (CLB 7+).
- Ready to work.
- Willingness to relocate.
To date, we are pleased to inform you that Traction on Demand has confirmed their participation and we will have individuals from Amazon also in attendance. This is a unique opportunity to network with industry professionals, build your confidence and connect directly with tech employers. The fee to attend is $25 CAD, where we will provide a gift card for the same amount upon your full attendance at our event.
BC JobConnect-registered jobseekers are invited to apply to join PowerHack by clicking here. The deadline to apply is February 25, 2021.
